How we do it?

Your expedition experience in these regions is centred around the following main aspects: relaxed and informal, local culture, and active adventures in body and mind. The destination makes the voyage, not the other way around.

Local always comes first

We want you to explore authentically, and truly discover the landscapes, cultures, tastes and stories that these warm destinations are so rich in.

As you visit a range of ports, cities and villages, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the diverse cultures there. Try regional food and delicacies, visit a community school, meet real local people and learn about their way of life.

Giving back to the communities

Rather than run all our off-ship activities ourselves, we choose to partner with local tour operators. Not only does it mean you benefit from knowledgeable guides, but you also give back to the communities we call on by supporting their local economy.

Whatever excursion you choose to book, whether it’s a tour of a cacao plantation in Mexico or bamboo rafting in Jamaica, Hurtigruten tries to support local businesses whenever possible.

Bringing the destination on board

You can also experience the charms of our destination on board. Where possible, local musicians and artisans perform or run workshops on the ship. This could be a talented dance troupe in Colombia’s Isla de Providencia or traditional Panamanian hat weavers in the port of Manta.

For your eating pleasure, our onboard chefs also craft dishes inspired by the gastronomy of the region, using unique herbs and spices or adopting traditional cooking techniques. Ingredients like vegetables and tropical fruit will be sourced locally, further adding to the positive ripple effect for the economy there.

Unwind and relax

If you need a bit of help to unwind, a certified yoga instructor will be on board during our voyages in these warm waters. Yoga and meditation sessions will complement your outer journey with an inner one, helping you de-stress, and energising you in body and soul. Then, round off your day of exploring with a soak in the hot tub out on deck or a steam in the sauna with panoramic views.

Hurtigruten cruises are famously informal. There’s no black tie, no butler, and the relaxed vibe extends to all areas of the ship. Feel like making the most of the warm weather and wearing your shorts and t-shirt to dinner? You go right ahead. If dinner happens to be a barbecue out on deck, you’ll already be dressed for the occasion.

Active mind, active body

The Expedition Team will be on hand throughout your journey to coordinate and guide your activities. They are your handpicked hosts made up of modern-day explorers, plus one or two specialist speakers in subjects such as history, geology, astronomy, botany, ornithology, or art, depending on the destination and voyage.

For instance, the itineraries in South America may be accompanied by a guest archaeologist who will provide insights into the region’s ancient civilisations. A pro photographer will also be on board to run workshops and give you tips on how best to capture that shot of a scarlet macaw along the Tárcoles River or the particular light of the Mayan Lamanai temple in Belize.
