Lyngsalpene (The Lyngen Alps)

Ski-in, ski-out – right from your ship.

There are very few places in the world like Lyngsalpene (the Lyngen Alps). You can fall asleep aboard a ship, wake up the next morning, put on your skis, climb to the top of a mountain and ski off-piste down to another harbour in the fjord, where your ship picks you up. And takes you to ski another mountain the next morning.

A backcountry ski paradise

Lyngsalpene, a mountain area on the Lyngen Peninsula about 60 kilometres west of Tromsø, is a dream destination for skiers. Several of the mountains rise from the fjord to heights of more than 1,000 metres. The tallest among them are Jiekkevarre and Store Lenangstind, at 1,833 and 1,596 metres over sea level respectively. Make it to the top of any of the peaks and you'll be rewarded with backcountry off piste zones and fabulous views of the fjord, islands and mountains.

Summer outdoor opportunities

There's no need to be an extreme sports enthusiast to enjoy nature here. In addition to the imposing mountains, there are gentler slopes that are perfect for hiking or cycling. You'll also find a number of excellent lakes for fishing and rich opportunities to see wildlife such as reindeer, elk and wolverine. Occasionally, you might even spot the shy and elusive lynx, an endangered mountain cat.

All of these opportunities are right at your feet when you visit Lyngen, on your way between the ports of Tromsø and Skjervøy.
