Safer together

Whenever you sail aboard The Norwegian Coastal Express, whether for 12 days or a few hours, your safety is our highest priority. A range of measures is in place, designed to reduce the spread of Covid-19. We’ll constantly update these practices based on the latest guidelines from Norwegian health authorities.

What we do

Testing of guests and vaccination certificate

  • Although not a requirement to sail with us, we do recommend that all guests have a negative Covid-19 test taken less than 72 hours before departure or a Norwegian or European vaccination certificate.

Hurtigruten Coastal Express provides COV19 antigen test (rapid test/hurtigtest) onboard with electronic certificate

  • From 6 September 2021, Hurtigruten Coastal Express will provide the COV19 antigen test (rapid test/hurtigtest) onboard with an electronic certificate. The service will be available throughout the entire stretch; Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen
  • This is first and foremost intended for guests who are departing Norway directly after their sailing with us – and have a requirement from the country of destination (or airline) to show such a certificate. It is the guest's responsibility to check which (if any) requirements are applicable before travelling to/returning to their destination post sailing
  • Booking a test appointment will occur onboard the ship
  • The price for the test (including the electronic certificate) is NOK 1100
    • Requirements for a guest to be able to receive their certificate are as follows:
      • Negative test result
      • Free of symptoms
      • No close contact with someone with COVID-19
      • Not in quarantine

Social distancing

  • We sail with a reduced number of guests on board to allow for social distancing.
  • Floor markings throughout the ship help to indicate appropriate social distance.
  • Seating capacity in the onboard restaurants has been reduced and seating times are staggered.
  • Use of the fitness centre, sauna, and hot tubs (for applicable ships) is limited to a few people at a time and each facility must be booked in advance.

Face masks

  • All guests over the age of 12 will need to wear face masks in all public areas of the ship.
  • We recommend FFP2 or medical face masks rather than self-made masks.
  • Face masks may even need to be worn in outside spaces where maintaining the recommended social distance is not possible.
  • Face masks must be worn during boarding and disembarkation during your voyage.
  • You will also be required to wear a face mask during all excursions.
  • Our crew members wear face masks in all public areas, when preparing meals in the galleys, and when cleaning your cabin.

Crew

The crew are there to ensure that your sailing is a smooth and safe experience and that all contact surfaces are continuously clean and sanitised. Each crew member follows stringent protocols and all crew including porters are tested for Covid-19.

  • Before boarding the ship, all crew members will have completed a Covid-19 training programme for hygiene procedures and infection management. They will also have undergone thorough first-aid training.
  • We are proud to have Professor of Medical Microbiology, Ørjan Olsvik as an advisor. He has more than ten years of international experience in infection control.
  • Most if not all crew members and transfer bus drivers will have been vaccinated against Covid-19 as part of Norway’s immunisation programme.
  • If a crew member develops Covid-19 symptoms during a cruise, he or she will have to isolate until they are cleared with a negative test result from our onboard medical team.
  • If the test result is positive, we’ll immediately carry out tracking and testing protocols, cooperating fully with local authorities and the Norwegian Institute of Public health.

Cleaning

We have always followed the highest standards when it comes to the cleanliness of our ships. These have been enhanced with new cleaning protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

  • All cabins and public areas are frequently disinfected.
  • In addition to thorough daily cleaning, all cabins are thoroughly disinfected after check-out. When one voyage ends, the ship is deep-cleaned to prepare for the next. All common areas are cleaned and disinfected several times a day.
  • We have regular hygiene inspections. External partners also perform announced and unannounced inspections on all ships.
  • We have an air condition system that provides a constant air supply - the air is not recycled.

Onboard restaurants

  • We’ve arranged for more dining sessions, allowing us to serve food to fewer people at a time at the recommended social distance.
  • We ask guests to arrive for their meals at the agreed time to minimise queuing.
  • You must wash or disinfect your hands outside our restaurants.
  • A temperature scanner will also be placed outside the restaurants. Instead of self-service buffets, our chefs will serve food directly to your individual plate. Table service is also in place in the bar, bakery, café, and bistro.
  • Kitchens will continue to uphold its usual high standards of hygiene and quality and tables and menus will be sanitised immediately after use.

Excursions

Currently, we offer a selected set of excursions in line with national and local regulations.

  • Numbers may be limited on certain excursions to accommodate social distancing. This includes during transport on buses, ferries or trains.
  • You are required to wear a face mask during all excursions and on transfer buses, ferries or trains.

As a result of these modified procedures, you may have longer to wait at airport security with the waiting times as much as three hours or more.

If required, the Norwegian health authorities have established test centres at Oslo Airport, Bergen Airport, Trondheim Airport, Stavanger Airport, Bodø Airport and Ålesund Airport for passengers arriving in Norway from abroad.
